Free Illinois Driving Practice Test

12 questions · ~5 minutes · No signup needed

Test yourself on the Illinois Rules of the Road — the same material the SOS written exam covers. See where you stand in about 5 minutes.

What's covered

12 randomized questions drawn from 9 topic areas the Illinois Secretary of State tests on the written exam: traffic laws, right-of-way, signals and crossings, speed and stopping, alcohol and DUI, sharing the road, parking, adverse conditions, and insurance and crash reporting. When you finish, you'll see your score, a breakdown by topic, and feedback on your answer and the correct answer for every question you missed.

Who it's for

  • Teens preparing for the permit test

Get a feel for what the permit test looks like before you sit down at the SOS — with no pressure and no time limit.

  • Adults getting licensed for the first time

Licensing as an adult is doable. Start by finding out what you already know and what you still need to review.

  • Spanish-speaking students

Studying driving rules in your second language is already hard enough. Practice here in Spanish — the same rules and exam material, in the language you think in.

  • Employment / work-required licensing

Need a license for work? Find out fast if you're close to passing, or if a prep program will save you weeks.

  • 18–20 certificate course students

Required to complete a 6-hour Adult Driver Ed course? Use this test to check your grasp of the material before you enroll.

Common questions

Is this the real SOS test?+
No. This is an original practice test we wrote from the Illinois Rules of the Road handbook — the same source the real exam uses. You cannot take your actual permit or license exam here; that has to be done at an SOS facility.
How accurate is this compared to the actual exam?+
Our questions cover the same IL Rules of the Road topics the SOS tests on — often framed as real driving situations, so you have to think the rule through instead of just recognizing it. The real exam pulls from a much bigger pool and weights sign recognition and specific statutes more heavily than a 12-question sample can cover — a high score here means you have a foundation, not a guarantee. A low score doesn't mean you'll fail — it means you know exactly what to review.
Do I need to create an account?+
No. No signup, no email, no password — start the test and get your results immediately.
Do you have other languages?+
Right now, English and Spanish only. The school has always run bilingual, and the practice test is no different.
